About Lakeland Florida
The city of Lakeland is located in Polk, County Florida east of Tampa along Interstate 4 and is part of the Tampa Bay Area. The city is known for its many lakes including a total of 38 named lakes and many unnamed bodies of water. The Lakes started to attract Swans in 1923, however, they were eradicated by alligators and pets by 1954. A Lakeland resident wrote to Queen Elizabeth asking for more swans. The royal family then allowed the capture of two royal swans and sent them to Lakeland. Swans that now call Lakeland home are descendants of those two royal swans. Within Lakeland's city limits there are three magnet-choice high schools, five traditional high schools, seven middle schools, and 28 elementary schools are run by Polk County School board. For springtime entertainment, the Joker Marchant Stadium hosts the Detroit Tigers spring training. Lakeland also has five sister cities in Japan, China, Moldova, Canada, and Jamaica.
