The 2022 Dodge Challenger is one of the few classic American muscle cars that you can still buy brand new. Of course, you don’t have much time to get your hands on a new Challenger, since Dodge has plans to retire its infamous sports coupe after the 2023 model year. Let’s take a look at everything you can enjoy when you choose the 2022 Challenger.
What’s new for the 2022 Dodge Challenger?
Shoppers can now add the Jailbreak package to their SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody models. It takes the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine to the next level, boosting output to 807 horsepower. This package also gives your Challenger a unique look, with exclusive styling and badging.
Which powertrains are available for the 2022 Dodge Challenger?
These Challengers offer a variety of powertrains, and availability depends on which trim model you select:
- SXT, GT: 3.6-liter V6 engine (303 horsepower, 268 lb-ft of torque) + eight-speed automatic transmission
- R/T: 5.7L V8 (375 hp, 400 lb-ft with eight-speed automatic) (375 hp, 410 lb-ft with six-speed manual)
- R/T Scat Pack: 6.4L V8 (485 hp, 475 lb-ft)
- SRT Hellcat: Supercharged 6.2L V8 (717 hp, 656 lb-ft) + eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual
- SRT Hellcat Redeye: Supercharged 6.2L V8 (797 hp, 707 lb-ft) + eight-speed automatic
- SRT Super Stock: Supercharged 6.2L V8 (807 hp, 707 lb-ft) + eight-speed automatic
Each Challenger trim model also adds additional performance gear and comfort features. As you move up the list, you’ll discover more and more creature comforts and tech features, too. For example, the base SXT includes the touchscreen Uconnect infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The GT adds a functional hood scoop, performance brakes, and a performance-tuned suspension. The R/T adds an active performance exhaust system.
The R/T Scat Pack is very focused on performance, with a launch control system, Brembo performance brakes, and a line lock for burnouts at the drag race. The SRT Hellcat not only adds the supercharged V8, but it’s also stocked with wider performance tires, competition suspension with adaptive damping, and larger Brembo brakes.
Will there be a 2022 Dodge Challenger convertible?
Not exactly. Dodge doesn’t offer a convertible version of its Challenger. However, a company called Drop Top Customs has long been transforming hardtop Challengers into convertibles. For the 2023 model year, you can order one of these Drop Top Customs numbers from your local dealership, when you build a Challenger from the ground-up. But keep in mind that this offer isn’t available for 2022 models.
Is Dodge going to discontinue the Challenger?
Dodge plans to phase out the Challenger as we know it: a gasoline-powered muscle car. But the automaker also plans to replace this beloved model with an all-electric equivalent. Dodge hasn’t released the details to its upcoming EV sports coupe, but you can expect it to arrive in 2024.
